I always loved The Amazing World Of Gumball and thought it was one of Cartoon Network’s best originals. In its day, it was frequently overshadowed by bigger hits like Adventure Time, Teen Titans Go and Steven Universe, but it kept chugging along in their shadow until it finally started getting noticed at the end of the decade. At that point, though, it was in reruns — what else to do but just keep rerunning it forever and ever while promising the creative team would get back together ONE of these years.

It’s taken so long for Gumball to resume production that it’s outlived Cartoon Network itself. CN is still there, but in zombie form, and I fear if new episodes of this hilarious treasure were to debut there at nine in the morning on a Saturday, no one would see them. It was considered controversial when the shows revival was revealed last month to be a Hulu exclusive, but the reality is, this improves its chances of people finding it.

Today they revealed precisely when the show (now called The Wonderfully Weird World Of Gumball) will reach us. Looks like the day is close — July 28. Maybe they’ll resolve the cliffhanger from the previous series finale, maybe not (the teaser below keeps it vague).

Years before Smiling Friends was doing the mixed-media thing, Gumball made it look effortless with cartoon characters of all shapes and styles running around a realistic background. The series had the writing to back up its visuals with smart, hilarious dialogue and a level of cutting social satire you usually only saw in adult animation. Did they make a direct reference to The Last Of Us? They sure did!

Because Gumball used actual kids to do the voices of its characters, they were recast throughout the original run of the show and have been recast again. This time Alkaio Thiele is playing Gumball, Hero Hunter is Gumball’s younger brother Darwin, and Kinza Syed Khan is younger sister Anais (this is the first time Anais has been recast — Kyla Rae Kowalewski managed to keep the role throughout the run). Teresa Gallagher and Dan Russell return as their parents.

“We thought it was about time that Gumball and the rest of the gang woke up from their catnap, to do what they do best and delight more fans with distinctive humor, visual inventiveness and wild adventures,” said Vanessa Brookman, Warner Bros. Discover’s General Manager of International Kids, Animation & Franchise. “Guided by the immense talents of Ben, Matt, Erik and team, the new series continues Gumball’s legacy as one of the most iconic, groundbreaking and beloved Cartoon Network shows of all time.”

If you’ve never seen Gumball before, there’s no better time like the present (and you’re gonna have a blast, I envy you). You have one month to catch up — the city of Elmore makes its glorious return July 28.
