Anais, Darwin and Gumball want the family to adopt a puppy. Instead, they get a turtle. A turtle that hates them.

This was a fantastic episode. While I greatly appreciate the episodes of the show that tell us more about Gumball’s classmates, I’ve always contended that the best episodes are the ones that involve the entire Watterson family. They have such good personalities that play off of one another very well, and even though Nicole didn’t do as much in this episode as the other family members, she still had a powerful presence. Richard has come a long way since season one and I loved every moment of him in this episode. He’s an idiot, but he’s a lovable idiot, and pretty much everything that comes out of his mouth is comedy gold. It’s also good to see Anais spending more time with her brothers. I’ve often felt that Anais gets shortchanged when it comes to appearances in the show, as she should technically be just as important as Darwin and Gumball.  The boys continued to be their usual fun selves and I am continuing to be impressed by Jacob Hopkins and Terrell Ransom Jr.

Gumball Puppy 1

The main reason I enjoyed this episode is because it felt complete. Ideally, all episodes should feel that way, but that rarely turns out to be the case. It’s easy for the pacing to feel off, as it did in “The Coach”, or for the ending to feel lacking, like it did in “The Virus”. This episode, however, had three great acts. The first act had a lot of humor. The second act continued to deliver the jokes while setting the stage for the tension to come, which the third act certainly delivered upon. The climax was particularly well animated, with Nicole driving like crazy and Gumball desperately running away from the evil turtle. It still had some great gags as well; I certainly did not expect Darwin to be as intense as he was, even though he has shown such intensity in the past. I suppose I would have preferred it if the turtle’s fate was left more ambiguous, but having it walk out of the fire like the Terminator was a nice touch. The episode ended with the Wattersons accepting that they will have to keep the turtle for the rest of their lives, but I doubt we’ll be seeing him again for a while. Still, I wouldn’t mind a sequel episode.
