The Amazing World Of Gumball – “The Coach” Recap

The new coach at Elmore Junior High is encouraging the students to get more active, which leads to a confrontation between Gumball and Jamie.

Gumball Coach 1

While I greatly enjoy The Amazing World Of Gumball, I haven’t always liked every episode. Most of the episodes that I’ve had problems with were due to specific things: a character being misrepresented or a joke being pushed too far. “The Coach”, however, just didn’t work for me as an episode. I had expected it to be a Jamie episode, but it really wasn’t. She was in it, and she spoke more in it than she did in the two previous seasons combined, but it didn’t feel like she got anywhere near the same level of characterization that characters had gotten in their episodes during season two. Or even season three for that matter, with all of the characterization that Sarah received in “The Fan”. Instead, this episode was mostly about a new character, the coach, who I just didn’t find funny. The character’s voice was grating and too much dialogue was written for her. And yes, it’s “her”. The episode ended in an anticlimax where the boys were stunned to learn that the coach was a woman, which I assume is why so much time was spent on the coach. It’s as if they wanted that revelation to be a very big joke to end the episode on, but I felt that they swung out on that one.

Gumball Coach 2

There were a few jokes that worked. I liked the brief flashbacks where the boys talked about some of the horrible things Jamie had done, like biting off Teri’s foot and shooting it back at her in the form of a spitball. The scene where the boys do awful cartwheels through a yard filled with angry dogs was also amusing and seemed like a nice throwback to “The DVD”. Both Jacob Hopkins and Terrell Ransom Jr. continued to do well as the new voices of Gumball and Darwin, although I did feel that the voice direction for Jamie was slightly problematic. I know Jamie is a bully, but having her speak like a stereotypical bully just felt a bit forced. I think I would have preferred it if she had a more natural voice. On the old website, it was said that Jamie wasn’t originally a bully, but instead became one after Miss Simian flunked her and made her lose all of her friends. It was also said that she joined Tina’s gang. Both of these things seem to have been dropped, with Tina not even showing up in this episode, but I can’t help but wonder if Jamie would have been more interesting had they stayed in place. Perhaps we’ll see if they explore those things in the many episodes yet to come.

When the boys show up to school in an unusually happy mood, Miss Simian begins to suspect that they are infected with some sort of virus.

I’ve always preferred comedy over horror. I can appreciate the classics, but most forms of media that are meant to be scary just try too hard. Fortunately, I am not entirely unfamiliar with the tropes of the genre, so I was able to discern what this episode brought to the table and I liked it. Miss Simian has been the subject of episodes in the past, but this is the first time she has been the primary focus. She carried the episode rather well, although I feel like this episode would have benefited from having the outbreak happen just a bit sooner. Replacing zombies with happy children was very amusing, with the virus being spread through hugs instead of through bites and scratches. There were a lot of references to things that are commonly done in these types of movies, but the “pretend to be infected” gag that surprisingly works is always one of my favorites. “Shaun of the Dead” comes to mind. The episode didn’t have much of a resolution since Miss Simian failed to cure the outbreak, but I can forgive these types of endings as long as they aren’t too common. All in all, this was a solid episode. It had some very funny moments and it built up the tension appropriately.

Anais, Darwin and Gumball want the family to adopt a puppy. Instead, they get a turtle. A turtle that hates them.

This was a fantastic episode. While I greatly appreciate the episodes of the show that tell us more about Gumball’s classmates, I’ve always contended that the best episodes are the ones that involve the entire Watterson family. They have such good personalities that play off of one another very well, and even though Nicole didn’t do as much in this episode as the other family members, she still had a powerful presence. Richard has come a long way since season one and I loved every moment of him in this episode. He’s an idiot, but he’s a lovable idiot, and pretty much everything that comes out of his mouth is comedy gold. It’s also good to see Anais spending more time with her brothers. I’ve often felt that Anais gets shortchanged when it comes to appearances in the show, as she should technically be just as important as Darwin and Gumball.  The boys continued to be their usual fun selves and I am continuing to be impressed by Jacob Hopkins and Terrell Ransom Jr.

Gumball Puppy 1

The main reason I enjoyed this episode is because it felt complete. Ideally, all episodes should feel that way, but that rarely turns out to be the case. It’s easy for the pacing to feel off, as it did in “The Coach”, or for the ending to feel lacking, like it did in “The Virus”. This episode, however, had three great acts. The first act had a lot of humor. The second act continued to deliver the jokes while setting the stage for the tension to come, which the third act certainly delivered upon. The climax was particularly well animated, with Nicole driving like crazy and Gumball desperately running away from the evil turtle. It still had some great gags as well; I certainly did not expect Darwin to be as intense as he was, even though he has shown such intensity in the past. I suppose I would have preferred it if the turtle’s fate was left more ambiguous, but having it walk out of the fire like the Terminator was a nice touch. The episode ended with the Wattersons accepting that they will have to keep the turtle for the rest of their lives, but I doubt we’ll be seeing him again for a while. Still, I wouldn’t mind a sequel episode.

Gumball Recipe 2

Gumball Logo Big

Gumball is determined to learn how Anton continues to come to school each day despite being destroyed in numerous ways.

This was a fun episode of Gumball, but it was also very predictable. I know plots are often recycled in animation, but generally any episodes about cloning all follow the exact same tropes. I suppose the episode deserves credit for not having all of the clones try to become “real”, as only the burnt toast was interested in doing that, but everything was fairly by-the-book right down to the ending where a clone ended up surviving. Still, there were a number of good gags. Richard’s brief desire to eat all of the clones was amusing and I liked how easily all of the clones were defeated with a little bit of water. It was nice to see Anton get an episode, even if we barely got to see the real Anton due to the emphasis being on the clones. It’s hard to tell if the actual Anton has enough of a personality to get another episode down the road, but with two more seasons ordered, perhaps he’ll get another shot to prove he’s something more than a prop. Time will tell.

Gumball Name 1

Gumball Logo Big

When Gumball learns that his real name is Zach, he begins to behave differently as he struggles with his new-found identity.

Gumball Name 1

I found this to be an amusing episode of Gumball. While it’s not the first time Gumball has struggled with being controlled by something, it was executed very well and had some very solidly paced jokes. I believe there were only a few moments in the episode that I didn’t find funny. I also liked how the episode was continuity heavy, with moments from both season one and season two being referenced. We even got to see the evil turtle again and he was only introduced a couple of episodes ago. Zach proved to be an interesting villain and it was nice to see how some episodes would have played out had Gumball been, to borrow a term from “The Sweaters”, hardcore. I know some fans have never liked how Gumball is such a failure, but I’ve always found his failure to be endearing provided they didn’t push it too far. If Gumball had won more throughout the series, even to a much lesser extent than what was shown in this episode, I’m not sure if the previous two seasons would have been as memorable. It’s Gumball’s optimism that shines in light of his misfortune that makes him such a cute kid.

Gumball Name 2

I will say that while I did really enjoy this episode, I’m not sure if it was the wisest move to say that Gumball’s real name was Zach. Even with him legally changing his name to Gumball at the end of the episode, many fans are already editing wiki entries across the web to refer to him as Zach. It feels as if the show is trying to explain things that don’t really need to be explained. There would have been nothing wrong if “Gumball” was simply his name from birth. I can only hope that the show avoids feeling obligated to continue doing this sort of thing going forward. I know there is an upcoming episode about Penny that will focus on what she looks like underneath her shell, but couldn’t she just be a peanut with antlers? I’ve always favored character development and continuity, but I care more about personalities and how the characters interact with one another. I never needed – or wanted – to know Gumball’s real name. Ultimately, as long as the episodes are funny then I have little to complain about, but I hope they don’t try to focus too much on these little details.

On a particularly uneventful day, the background characters decide it’s time for them to get the spotlight.

While some may disagree, I absolutely adored the experimental episodes in season two of Gumball. Both “The Tape” and “The World” were extremely refreshing and I admired the show for being bold enough to do something different. So, it stands to reason that I am very happy that season three has continued to be bold with this episode. Elmore is a fantastic place with so many appealing characters, yet more often than not they are relegated to minor roles. By giving an episode to these characters, the show has tapped into something that it was previously letting go to waste. If anything, I’m a bit disappointed that the show didn’t include more minor characters in this episode. It probably would have been a good time to make a joke about Tobias’ sister Rachel, who was deemed so uninspired by the crew that they stopped having her show up anymore. However, the episode was a ton of fun as it was and it had a heck of a musical number in it, so I really can’t complain. I sincerely hope that there are more experimental episodes later this season, but if not, I’m sure there will be more in the next two seasons.

Gumball Gripes 2

Gumball’s bad mood causes the entire town to think he and Darwin are deserving of charity.

Gumball Gripes 2

This was an interesting episode. I didn’t quite like it as much as other episodes, as I found the “complaining” voices to be a bit grating and felt that the “B” plot was more enjoyable than the “A” plot, but it turned out well enough towards the end. I just feel that the scenes with Anais and Richard were more enjoyable than the scenes with the boys. Anais and Richard don’t spend enough time with one another and I thought that it was cute how she was trying to teach her father how to be sarcastic. The payoff at the end was pretty funny. I’m hoping that the two of them will continue to interact with one another more often as the series progresses. As for the “A” plot, it just started off a bit too slow for my tastes. It was nice to see more of the side-characters, with them wanting/needing to help the boys because they assumed that they were poor, but too much time was spent standing in front of that store talking. The climax helped save the episode, as did the joke about not understanding the episode’s message, but I feel that this episode could have been better.

Gumball Vacation 1

Gumball Logo Big

The Wattersons’ vacation goes awry when it seems as if a scary story is coming true.

This was a fantastic episode. It had ample amounts of humor and tension which made it delightful to watch. I’ve complained several times in the past that episodes of the show tend to fly by too quickly, but this episode provided so much content for a standard length episode. I don’t believe a single scene went to waste, as the episode continually built up towards the climax while sprinkling in hilarious jokes all throughout it. It was great to see the family get out of Elmore for a bit, especially after the previous episode, and the hillbilly archtype worked well for the “villains”. Being a southern gentleman myself, I rather liked how they were actually extremely hospitable people. The show has a ton of great characters, but there’s always room for new characters to be introduced even if they only show up in an episode or two. Still, the Wattersons carry the show and I adore each and every one of them. Nicole remains my favorite, as I admire her dedication to her family and enjoy her violent tendencies, and her role in this episode was fairly substantial. The flashbacks with Richard inadvertently ruining her days off from work were amusing. Richard is a much more enjoyable character now than he was in season one, as I’ve said many times before, and I like to see him interact with Nicole. A lot of fans question why they’re married – and the official comic even made a joke about Nicole being “tricked” into marrying him – but they truly love one another and I’m hoping more episodes show that going forward.
